Barbara Elaine Osborn, 72, of Des Moines passed away March 30, 2022 at Valley View Village Nursing Home. She was born September 29, 1949, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Robert and Frances (Hlavacka) Osborn.

Barb and her two older sisters grew up on their grandmother’s farm northeast of Marshalltown. She attended school in Garwin, Iowa and had fond memories of her grade school and high school years. Post high school, Barb enrolled at Iowa State University where she pursued a major in child development and planned to be a preschool teacher. During Barb’s senior year at ISU, she suffered a stroke. Following emergency brain surgery, Barb was a patient at Younker’s Rehab for six months learning to walk and talk all over again. Barb was determined to get out of rehab and get on with life and was grateful for the influence and friendship of her occupational therapist Marty.

Barb worked as a preschool teacher and Activities Director at Goodwill Industries. She loved traveling and took numerous trips throughout the world to Israel, Europe, South America, Hawaii, and Alaska. Some of her other interests included jigsaw puzzles, cross-stitch, entertaining friends and family, dog sitting and finding the best Reuben sandwich in Des Moines.

Barb is survived by her sister, Nancy (Richard) Knight; brother-in-law, John (Karen) Bedard; nieces, Teri Bedard, Shari (Jason) Scoonover and Kristi (Steve) Knight; nephews, Brian (Suzie) Bedard, Eric Knight and Andrew (Jess) Bedard; grandnieces, Katelyn, Elaina and Delaina; and grandnephews, Brendan, Tanner, Aidan, and Dillon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Karen Bedard; and nephew, Tom Bedard.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at The Mission Church in Urbandale, 12001 Ridgemont Drive in Urbandale. Barb will be laid to rest Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Garwin Cemetery in Garwin, Iowa.
