As Mr. Paul Harvey would say…here’s the rest of the story. In high school Julian was in a car club where he and his friends made their hotrods go faster (in his words, "fix up the cars so they wouldn’t keep falling apart and breaking down"). Julian spent 2 years getting an electrical/mechanical associates degree and moved to Glendive, Montana to work at MDU as an electrical lighting salesman and start a family. Julian was very involved in the Jaycee’s and Toastmaster’s, and helped light fireworks for 4th of July festivals. He was a member of the Elk’s and was not fond of public speaking, but did so to be a better communicator for his job. He loved taking his family to the county fair, drove a demolition derby car, carted his kids through the dirt trails and hills of a local canyon on a motorcycle and loved the outdoors. He took his boys camping, fishing, hiking and was their boy scout leader. Julian loved spending time at his parents’ lake cabin on Big Cormorant Lake, a short drive from Fargo with his brothers, Bob, Ronnie, and Jeff. They fished, water skied, canoed, ice skated, snowmobiled and spent many summers (sometimes winters) enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. He made regular summer trips back to ‘the lake cabin’ throughout his lifetime. After a new job opportunity came up with Westinghouse, he moved the family to Iowa in January of 1979. Four years later he met his wife of 38 years whilst playing in a church volleyball singles game. It was ‘spike’ at first sight! Retiring from Westinghouse after 17 years, Julian finished his working career at Menards in the electrical department. He was a strong believer and loved prophecy. Julian was a gentle witness for the Lord, had a contagious laugh, enjoyed joking around, and could get along with anyone. If popcorn was near him he’d eat it all, and then make some more. Julian was a competitive bowler and never turned down a round of golf or a day of fishing. Julian loved the church and looked forward to bible studies, men’s breakfasts, and church retreats. Julian spent 21 years legally blind, and earned that ‘status’ at age 60. Yes, Julian was legally blind and only those very close to him knew. He ran the Des Moines Turkey Trot at age 79, and continued to walk everywhere he could without assistance. Julian loved conversation, gave words of wisdom, always asked to pray for you (including his doctors and their team minutes before open heart surgery). He was a wonderful listener, and he was a humble servant of the Lord. Julian had only one question when meeting someone for the first time…"do you believe in Jesus?" Julian, Dad, Grandpa, Cook, you will be missed. Well done good and faithful servant…well done.
