Rex H. Ackelson
March 19, 2022
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Rex Harold Ackelson. Rex passed away peacefully on March 19, 2022, at Methodist Hospital.
Rex was born on May 23, 1953, to Beverly and Carroll Ackelson. He grew up in Altoona, Iowa, where he attended Southeast Polk High School. At a young age, Rex developed a fascination and love for automobiles which lasted his whole life. He followed that passion into his adulthood and worked for many years as an auto mechanic. Prior to owning his own auto repair shops, Rex worked alongside his father and brother at Ackelson Sheet Metal.
On April 16, 1971, he married Kathleen Riley and together they had three children: Poppy Gwen, Jeremy, and Travis. Rex and Kathy would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary next month.
Rex is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Ackelson; son, Jeremy (Jill) Ackelson; mother, Beverly Ackelson; sister, Becky (Brad) McAninch; and his brother, Jon (Cathy) Ackelson. He is also survived by his three grandsons, Riley Ackelson, Joel Martin, and Sawyer Ackelson; great-grandson, Takoda Stroud Ackelson; along with a large extended family and many friends.
Rex was predeceased by his father, Carroll Ackelson; daughter, Poppy Gwen Ackelson, and son, Travis Ackelson.
Rex never knew a stranger. As his many friends would confirm, Rex was a loyal friend and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a bright spark in this world and will be deeply missed. Peace in heaven, Rex.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
