Service Details

Wesley came from a Des Moines Pioneer family and was a proud east sider. He was a January, 1944 graduate of East High School. Immediately upon graduation he entered the U. S. Navy and served as a signalman on the U.S.S. Dewey in the Pacific theatre. He was decorated for five battles and the Philippines liberation. But the greatest danger he endured was going through a typhoon where his ship almost sank.

After the war Wesley worked for the Des Moines Post Office until retirement and then worked at the Des Moines Postal Credit Union. He also enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired after 35 years.

Wesley was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Aileen Redhead; his son, Wesley Earl Redhead; his brother, Herbert Kelland Redhead; and his sister, Mildred Joy Gilchrist. He is survived by his sons, Frederick (Theresa) Redhead and Douglas (Kathleen) Redhead; his grandchildren, Megan Redhead, Melanie (Stefan) Brehrendsen, Joshua (Amanda) Redhead, Derrick (Lindsay) Redhead, and Aileen Hunnell; and his six great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church 1271 E. 9th St. (formerly Visitation Parish) on Monday, March 21, 2022. Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are encouraged to make a donation to a charity of their choice.
