Freddie Leroy Hood, Sr., 81, passed away at home on March 16, 2022.

Fred was born July 22, 1940 to Bob and Alberta Hood. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 6 years from 1957 to 1963. He immediately joined the United States Army and served in Vietnam from 1963 to 1965.

During his service, he earned several medals including: Armed forces expeditionary medal, expert badge with rifle bar, sharpshooter badge with carbine bar. The night before reenlisting, he met the love of his life Mary Lou Floden. They instantly fell in love and were married 9 weeks later on April 2, 1966. This year, they would have celebrated 56 years of marriage. Together they had 6 children: Debbie Hood, Cathy Williams, Susan (Doug) Dearden, Diana (Jim) Fazio, Mary Lou Hood, Freddie (Kate) Hood. He was a proud grandpa to 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Pam Brown and brother Rod Hood.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Bob, Roberta, Gary and Judy.

He was a jack of all trades, but woodworking was his specialty. Fred even built a Ferris wheel for his kids. He retired from Little Giant Corporation in 2000. Fred proudly served as commander in 2006 to 2007 for VFW post 738. He always kept up-to-date on all things political but his real passion showed in the many love notes that he left for his wife over the past 56 years.

He will be laid to rest with military honors on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA 50003.
