Heung Luongthi, age 86, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022.

Heung was born October 5, 1935 in Son La, Vietnam. She was the daughter of Tom Luongvan and Tam Luongthi. Heung was the third eldest of eight siblings. She was married to Kou Kouangvan on April 9, 1954. Two years later she and her husband moved to Vientiane, Laos to start new life and a family. She lived in Vientiane, Laos for twenty-one years where she was a stay at home mom, caretaker, and homemaker.

In February of 1979, Heung and her family fled communist Laos in pursue of a better life. They escaped to a refugee camp in Nong Khai, Thailand. They lived in there for over a year and a half until they had an opportunity to come to the United States. Heung arrived in the United States on August 25, 1980, and became a U. S. citizen on March 29, 1996.

While living in the United States, she continued her role as a stay at home caretaker and homemaker. In the years to come she help raised three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was a simple woman that enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved to garden, cook, and sew. But the one thing she absolutely enjoyed the most was spending quality time with her family. She was the matriarch and loved her family unconditionally. Her family was her first priority and she took pride in the family that she and her husband created. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her son Bounlay (Xay) Kouangvan, three grandchildren Keopaseuth, Keopasith, and Merry (Michael), five great-grandchildren Bethany, Abby, Isacc, Savannah, and Laoden and two sisters.

Heung was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and three sisters.

Funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines.
