Wilma Scieszinski
March 06, 2022
Wilma Scieszinski passed away peacefully at home on March 6, 2022.
Wilma was born July 15, 1931 to Arthur Glen and Bertha Olive “Howk” Overturf at their farmstead near Lineville, IA. She attended grade school in Lucas County until she was 10 years old. Her family then moved to a farm near Iconium, where Wilma graduated from Moravia High School in 1949. She then married her high school sweetheart, Robert Scieszinski on November 19, 1949.
Wilma and Bob moved to Newton, IA where Wilma worked as a secretary until her first child was born in 1952. When Bob’s brother went into the service, Bob and Wilma headed back home to help out with the family farm. Several years and four children later, Bob had a job offer in Des Moines so the family moved again. Wilma was anxious about raising a family in the “big city” but later came to love it, where their fifth child was born.
After the children were all in school, Wilma went back to work as a secretary. The work she was most proud of was in politics and government. She worked 12 years as a secretary for four different State Representatives; as Campaign Manager for the then-Secretary of Agriculture; and Office Manager for JoAnn Zimmerman, who was running for Governor. Wilma also served as a board member of the Women’s Business and Professional Association.
Wilma was very involved with the Catholic Cursillo movement, was on many church boards and a member of Altar and Rosary Society. Wilma was also very involved with her children’s school and sports activities as a volunteer, team mother, and a multitude of other duties. Though she loved her work, community and church involvement, Wilma always said that her greatest role and career was that of being “Mother”.
Wilma is survived by three children, Robert (Patricia) of Sturgeon Bay, WI, Debbie Wilson (fiancé George) of Des Moines, IA, and Douglas (Laurie) of Urbandale, IA; 9 grandchildren; 4 granddaughters-in-law; and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Sr.; sons, James Raymond and David Glen; and her son-in-law, Richard J. Wilson, Jr.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Augustin Catholic Church on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation and luncheon will follow, with internment at Glendale Cemetery at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Wilma. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

My mama, Melody Bartel and I just met Wilma last June. Miss a Wilma was mamas first friend at UHC, who was there for short time for skilled nursing. She made fast friends by inviting mama to sit at her table and play Bingo together. She put a sparkle in my mamas eye and a joy in her heart that I hadnt seen since my daddy passed away in May. They were instant friends. Sharing meals, playing Bingo, giving each other laughs and giggles and prayers. There were many letters back and forth, but I will never ever forget the day we took her out and helped her escape from the home a minute. We took her to get her a manicure and pedicure! She said shed never had one before at a salon. We had lunch, went shopping. We stayed out 9 hours.. way later than we had permission for and she just thought that was so hilarious! She kept giggling every time we asked if she wanted to go somewhere else.. and of course, she was all in! We didnt know all she had was a 4 hour pass. She was so ornery and full of sugar and spice. She was sweet and sassy and full of wonderful surprises! Her humor had us rolling in tears and her love and zest for life filled us with so much joy. We took her a quilt and a rose globe for Christmas and you thought we brought her a mansion. She was so humble and gracious, a fabulous lady. A part of our hearts went with this wonderful woman, to her beyond. So sorry we missed your service. We would have been there to honor you.
I promise, once again, Miss Wilma, we will never forget you or the friendship we shared. You are far too incredible a person to ever forget. May God comfort your family.
We love you very much, Miss Wilma. You taught us to keep smiling through our tears. Thank you for loving us, too.

I had the pleasure of helping Miss Wilma at UHCC when I worked there. She always looked great, she wouldnt leave her room without every hair in place, makeup on, and clothes lookin sharp :)
She was a true LADY. She was friendly with everyone and always checked in on residents who werent feeling the best. She loved her plants and faithfully watered them. She also really liked the tomato and flower garden that was put in last year. I would always find her looking at them and frequently took her out to check the soil and shed have me get the ripe tomatoes to bring in. I had the honor to chat with her a bit and will always remember the life stories shed tell. Shed had a lot of great losses in her life but managed to live through her pain and carry on, usually with a smile and a kind word. Lovely lovely women.
Im sorry for her familys loss.

I lost a very good friend in Wilma. She was always there for me in my marriage to David and all the years after. I never felt I could measure up to her as a wife, mother or grandmother because she set the bar so high. Heaven is a better place now.
