George Ellwanger
March 06, 2022
George Ellwanger, 87, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2022. He was born in Belvidere, South Dakota, on March 12, 1934, the son of Jacob and Christina Ellwanger.
George was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rosemary Stapp, in 1958. Together they made their home in Des Moines and raised 6 wonderful children.
George had a kind, loving spirit who never spoke poorly about anyone. He loved the Lord and church with all his heart which led to him being a longtime member of Fort Des Moines Church of Christ in Des Moines.
George loved to tinker whether it was woodworking, mechanics, or art. He was also a fan of the Iowa Cubs and Minnesota Vikings, but above all else, he cherished time spent with his family and loved ones.
George is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Rosemary; children: Dan Ellwanger, Scott Ellwanger, Kim (Steve) Crocker, James (Melinda) Ellwanger, Jan (Jeff) Jeske, and LeAnn Peterson (Bruce, dec. 2021); grandchildren: Steve Crocker, Katie (Josiah) Smith, Miles (Sara) Peterson, Miranda (Austin) De Young, Jess Ellwanger, Afton Jeske, and Joshua Jeske; great-grandchildren: Malachi Letic, Mika Letic, Levi De Young, Titus Peterson, Case Peterson, Evie Smith, Julian Smith, and Rev De Young; siblings, Dora (Jim) Sinner and Billy Ellwanger, as well as other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Christina Ellwanger; grandson, Blake Peterson; son-in-law, Bruce Peterson; and several siblings, Johnny Ellwanger, Eleanor Ellwanger, Henry Ellwanger, Harold Ellwanger, Cora Ellwanger, and Marvin Ellwanger.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m., also at the funeral home.

I have fond memories of George moving his family from western NE to Des Moines to help my parents establish a church in Des Monies. Ron and I were in high school and we spent many weekends, staying in their crowded home. There was always room for more people in his/ their home and in his / their hearts.
George was kind to take time to listen to us boys, mentor us with words of wisdom, while setting an positive example of a hard working dad, father, husband, and worker for Jesus. They lived on a dusty country road in the middle of corn fields. Yet their house was filled with such a welcoming spirit, No dust on conversations, no dust on good times of laughter, and maybe some dust on a project or two George was working on. All the Hunt families will miss seeing and talking with George, yet still feel his presence and influence in our hearts and lives.

George was always a kind man, humble and appreciative of life and people around him. I was always very comfortable in his presence and enjoyed his humor. He loved Jesus and now gets to dwell forever in glory praising The One who died for him! Much love and peace to those he left behind, you are in my prayers. -Chuck C.-
