Service Details

Susan Katharine (Hague) Owen was born to Betty (Thompson) Hague and John Hague on December 23, 1949. She welcomed her siblings Marilyn, Laura and Raymond over the next few years. She graduated High School from South East Polk and then moved on to Central College. While there as a French major, she had the opportunity to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, France for a year. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught French at West Marshall High School in State Center for a few years.

She was introduced to her soon to be husband William “Bill” Owen through mutual friend. They married on April 1, 1978. Upon her marriage, she became a stepmother to Jerome and not long after welcomed a baby girl Rachael.

The family moved around a bit through the years, finally settling down in Gilmore City, Iowa. For a short period Susan was a city clerk as well as a founder of the “Pots around Town” program. She became a Master Gardener due to her love of plants. She also enjoyed feeding her birds, reading, putting together puzzles and watching the NASCAR truck races.

Susan’s husband passed in 2016 and in 2021 she was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly after 8 months of fighting, she lost the battle in the early hours of March 3, 2022. She was surrounded with the love and comfort of family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2022 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Service will be livestreamed at Susan’s obituary page at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Susan is survived by her son, Jerome Owen and his wife Mary and daughter Kassandra; daughter, Rachael Amodeo and her husband Joe and two daughters Dominique and Rozalyn; sisters, Marilyn Powers and her husband Michael and Laura Woods and her son Jeremy; brother, Raymond Hague and his wife Laura and their three children Christina, Stephanie and Jonathan; and sister-in-law, Penny Allen and her two sons Will and Ed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Owen, her parents, Betty and John Hague, stepfather, Voris King, and her mother-in-law, Marie Owen.

Susan didn’t prefer cut flowers so please only send live plants. If you wish to send memorial donations, please send them to your local chapter of the Master Gardener’s Society.
