John Richard “Rick” Shawhan, Jr.
Of Des Moines, Iowa

Rick Shawhan, passed away, in the comfort of his home and in the arms of his children, after a prolonged battle with liver cancer, the morning of Thursday, February 24, 2022. He was 73 years old. Rick was born the son of LaVonne (Rice) John “Jack” Shawhan, Sr., on September 10, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Rick was a private person but would touch the heart of everyone he came in contact with. He was a genuine, one-of-a-kind soul, unlike any other, from the day he was born. A heart of pure gold. A boy who could do no wrong in his mother’s eyes and to a father who had his back, no matter what.

Rick rebuilt numerous cars, including his 73’ Dodge Charger, which he showcased and won trophies for at numerous car shows. His dream was to become a NASCAR driver. He enjoyed taking his kids to live WWF wrastlin’ matches. His love for football and gambling encouraged many trips to his favorite place to play, Las Vegas.

He was known as a trendsetter, a natural born leader, that definitely left his mark on the universe. Rick idolized ALL things Elvis Presley, which was displayed throughout his home, along with his oriental furniture collection. Rick had a wild side to him and was known for making others around him laugh, he even had his own lingo and verbiage for many things. Above all else he loved and treasured time spent with his family.

He will be deeply missed by his loving children Dawn Lovan, Ricky Shawhan III, Lisa (Jon) Jones, and Elvis (Rachel) Shawhan, 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, sister Roberta Whytus, his baby girl pup, Peaches Marie, and other loving relatives and many special friends.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Brenda Shawhan, and his siblings Cliff Johnson, Donnie Shawhan, Jackie Draper, and Kathy McCullough.

Visitation will be held from 10 am to 11 am, with funeral service to begin at 11 am, Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
