Harold Eugene Ackelson, age 93, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines.

Harold was born September 14, 1928 in Madison County, Iowa to Harold and Ruby (Jeffs) Ackelson. He grew up in the Des Moines area, graduating from East High School in 1946. Harold enlisted immediately after graduation and proudly served in the United States Navy. He married Donna Northrup on October 15, 1949 and they raised their three children in Des Moines.

Harold was a sheet metal worker and a member of Local 45. He dabbled in real estate for a while, then after retirement, started his own insurance company that he ran until he was 88 years old. He was a generous person, and will be remembered for his loving, caring nature. His strength of character was unmatched. He became the man of his house at an early age, and the positive traits he developed during his formative years defined who he was throughout his life. He had a big heart and a forgiving nature.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Nancy Smith (Curt); daughter, Judi Bailey; son, Scott Ackelson; grandchildren, Amy Drayton (Hank), Jason Bernard, Micheal Bailey, and Andrew Bailey; five great-grandchildren; sister, Beulah Kolter; and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; brother, Carroll Ackelson; sister, Shirley Niemeyer; son-in-law, Micheal Bailey, Sr.; and his grandson, Jordan Bailey

Cremation will occur and there will be no formal services held at this time.
