Virginia Humphrey

Onie Virginia Humphrey, age 102, passed away peacefully at Newton Health Care Center on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.

Virginia was born July 11, 1919 in Unionville, Missouri to Andrew and Onie Carter. Her family moved to Montour, Iowa when she was the age of 9. They moved to Des Moines during her senior year of high school and she received a diploma from both Montour and East High School in Des Moines. After graduation, she worked for a few families as a housekeeper. On August 1, 1942, she was married to Ivan Humphrey. They enjoyed many happy years together before his death a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. During World War II, she was an employee of the Post Exchange at Camp Beale, California where her husband was stationed at the time. Upon returning to Iowa, she worked for American Mutual Insurance Company until 1951. In 1954 she began working for Travelers Insurance Company where she was employed until 1983. After retirement, Virginia and Ivan took several vacation trips including Colorado, Utah, California, Washington, Oregon and Canada. She was able to live in her own home unassisted until April 2021.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Terry) Mitchell of Danville, IL; son, David (Melanie) Humphrey of Newton, IA; granddaughters, Kelli Mitchell (Darin) Stack of Danville, IL, Madison Humphrey and her fiancé Grant Sexton of Newton, IA, Gabriella Humphrey of Newton, IA, and Tara (Jason) Thole of Stafford, KS; grandson, Jason (Kelli) Humphrey of West Des Moines, IA; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
