Mary Tree age 78 passed away on February 7th 2022. Mary was born on 09/29/1944 in Nairobi Kenya, to Francis and Grace Kimani. She was the 2nd born of 10 children. She fell in love and married the late John Muchemi Gitonga in 1961. They had four children Teresiah Muchemi, Michael Gitonga, Lucy Njeri and David Kimani. She was widowed in 1986. She worked tirelessly to raise her children. Mary was always open to new experiences and in 1977 she took a driving course and landed a job at the Kenya Institute of Administration as one of the first females in that role. She had a successful career and worked way up to a role in the office of the president in 1984 through 2000 where she retired. Always seeking a new adventure, she moved to the United States in 2000. She remarried the late George Tree in 2002. In America she worked as a caregiver, she made many long-term friendships with both her clients and their family members. Mary was of the matriarch of the family, she proud to watch a new generation thrive in America. Her greatest joys were derived from spending time with her whole family.

Mary is survived by Daughters Teresiah Muchemi, Lucy Njeri, Sons Michael Gitanga and David Kimani. Daughter in Law Felista Kimani. Step Children Victor Tree, George Tree. She was the Grandmother to the late John Muchemi, Michelle Waweru, Denis Waweru, Maureen Waweru, John Waweru, Maryann Wanjiku, David Kimani Jr, and Arianna Kimani. Patrick Muchemi, Patricia Wangari, Michelle Ritho. Fabindra Maina, Catherine Waithara, Tiffany Wambui, Natasha Wanjiku and Christopher Tate. Great Grandmother to Kyle Kariuki, Bella Kairuki, Kayan Kairuki, Aidan Mwangi, Austin Mwangi and Avery Randall. Mary will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2022, with funeral service following at 11:00 a.m., at Imani Family Church, 815 8th St., West Des Moines. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Des Moines.
