Merle D. Short

Merle Short, 92, passed away on February 5, 2022, in West Des Moines. He was born in Des Moines, IA on May 10, 1929, the son of Imon and Nancy Short.

Merle loved fishing, driving fast cars, taking trips with his wife, Willa, and riding roller coasters in his younger years. He loved telling stories about his life, watching sports and listening to gospel music. He retired from Meredith/Burda after decades of service to the company. Merle was a thoughtful supervisor to his workers, and a wonderful provider for his family; above all, he cherished time spent with his family. Merle is survived by his loving children, Don (Dorene) Short, Steve (Dian) Short, and Jackie (Wayne) Wood; 4 grandchildren, Heather (George) Lauber, Zach Backstrom, Thom (Samantha) Short, and Kaylynn Short; and 7 great-grandchildren William, Gretchan, Johanna, Elaina, Avery, Layla and Scarlett; other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of seventy one years, Willa; his parents; brothers, Melvin and Will; sisters, Hilda, Imogene, Mildred and Etta. He is survived by his brother Earl.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet visitors from 1-2 p.m., Monday, also at the funeral home.
