Service Details

Bernard “Barney” G. Aunan, 94, went to his heavenly home on Friday, January 28, 2022. Services will be held at Westchester Evangelical Free Church, 4919 NW Aurora Ave. in Des Moines on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa at 2:00 p.m.

Barney was born on June 13, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Bert Sr. and Ingeborg Aunan. He attended school in both Chicago and Sioux City, Iowa where he graduated from Central High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. He married Loretta Bronleewe on August 29, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Barney worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years. He retired in 1981 and then formed Aunan’s Repair and Maintenance Services (ARMS) providing construction and remodeling services in the Des Moines metro area. He retired from ARMS in 2000. Barney was a member of Westchester Evangelical Free Church for over 56 years. He served in the choir, was a teacher, a deacon and a trustee for the church. He loved serving the Lord Jesus Christ in many ways and impacted many individuals for Jesus. He and Loretta loved traveling and enjoyed 17 trips overseas to 18 different countries. Barney was a member of The American Legion, Rotary, and the National Rifle Association. He loved hunting with his brothers.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; his son, Steven; and his brother, Norman. He is survived by his daughter, Carol of West Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Kris; 4 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren all of Minneapolis; his brothers, Milton Sr. of Ankeny and Bert Jr (Sharon) of Frisco, Texas; cousins, Mareen (Jim) Erwin of Spencer, Iowa and Mae Ballantyne of Little Rock, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
