Shirley Jean Schuler

Shirley Jean Schuler, 100, passed away surrounded by the love of her family January 23, 2022 at Trinity Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jean was born November 27, 1921 to Hans and Vara Peterson in Greenville, Iowa to a family of eight brothers and sisters. After graduating from Storm Lake High School, she began working for the local phone company. In 1944 she met and married Wayne Schuler and they lived in Florida and California while Wayne was in the military. After WW II, they relocated back to Iowa where the family grew to include Robert born in 1946, Shirley born in 1949, and finally Mary arriving in 1956. Jean enjoyed providing a wonderful home for her family. She loved baking, canning, gardening, ballroom dancing, swing dancing, and watching horse racing. In addition, she was a fantastic seamstress. One of her favorite things to do was to play card and board games with all her grandchildren. To sum up her life, she was the “salt of the earth.”

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Schuler; her children, Robert (Susan) Schuler, Shirley Paterson (Bill Barbour) and Mary (Greg) Gilkeson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Inez Hess.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and grandson, Austen.
Funeral services will be held at Saylorville Church, 6429 NW 6th Drive in Des Moines on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in the Spring.
