Naomi Jean Speck

Naomi Jean Speck, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 16, 2022. She was born the daughter of Ralph and Nellie Hopkins on June 9, 1929, in Tama, Iowa.

Naomi attended school in Tama and later moved to Des Moines to help raise her 11 siblings. She worked at Iowa Lutheran Hospital as a housekeeper for 20 years where she met her future husband and best friend, Donald. In 1979, she married Donald and over their 35 years of marriage, they shared several hobbies including, canning, crafts, and fishing.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Diana (Ed) Hughes and Larry Speck; sister, Joann Gonzalez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and family and friends.

Naomi was preceded in death by her husband, Donald P. Speck in 2014; parents; siblings, Beverly Speck, Robert Hopkins, Faye Porter, Jenni Hines, Goldie Lumadue, Sharon Hopkins, Mary Emery, and Bill Hopkins; children, James P. Swinehart in 2019, David D. Swinehart in 2021, and Susan Swinehart; and grandchildren, Denise Swinehart and Michael King.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Naomi will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Per the request of the family, masks will be required at both the funeral home and cemetery.
