John T. Mackin
January 09, 2022
John T. Mackin, 76, passed away on January 9, 2022, at Taylor House Hospice.
John was born May 7, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa.
John graduated from East High School in 1963. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army for 11 years, earning a Bronze Star Medal while serving in Vietnam. John retired from the US Postal Service after 39 years and was also a past President of the National Association of Postal Supervisors. He was also a regular of the “SE 23rd Court Neighborhood Restaurant Club”. John enjoyed and spent many years coaching at Grandview Little League. He loved traveling especially to Disney, Vegas, and going on cruises.
A word that sums up this incredible man is generous. He was generous with his time, generous with his love, generous with his money, generous with his knowledge, generous with his friendship, generous with his humor, and very generous with his opinions. He was surprisingly witty. His grandkids and family were the love of his life.
John is survived by his wife, Bonnie Mackin; son, Johnny Mackin, Jr.; daughter, Tammy (Chuck) Bortscheller; siblings, Carol (Darrell) Carpenter, Charlene (Fred) Williams, Pam Lewis, and David (Linda) Brewer; grandchildren, Maddie, Ella, Quinn, Olivia, and Elliot; special cousin, John Blanchard; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Brewer, and his stepfather, Heywood Brewer.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. A Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway. John will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery. John was one of the best friends Ive ever had in my life. I truly loved him like a brother and will always miss him, I hope it brings comfort to his family to know how much he loved and was loved by everyone. He was generous, humble and painfully honest. Go rest high on that mountain!

John was a good co-worker and friend. We enjoyed chatting about our military service during the Vietnam War. Much respect and honor to John. The Psalmist writes, "Precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of His godly ones." PSALM 116: 15. Trusting the family and friends of John will experience God's comfort and strength as they move through the grieving process.

The whole Mackin family has been in our thoughts and prayers during Johns journey. While he is now pain free, we know of the sorrow in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. We are extremely thankful for our memories of the funny, generous and kind neighbour that will be truly missed. God bless
