Gilbert Sleeth

Gilbert Zimmer Sleeth, age 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Regency Care Center in Norwalk while under the care of Suncrest Hospice.

Gilbert was born January 30, 1943 to Lloyd and Olive Sleeth. He was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area. Gilbert proudly served in the United States Army from March 31, 1960 –April 1, 1963. He met Monika in Germany and they were married on July 27, 1961. To this union three children were born: Michael, Brigitte, and Cory. Gilbert was employed by MidAmerican Energy for over 40 years prior to his retirement in 2006. He was a quiet man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and family vacations. He took his family to Germany many times to visit his in-laws.

He is survived by his daughter Brigitte Sleeth, daughter-in-law Teresa Sleeth-Heldt, three grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren with one on the way, and seven siblings.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife Monika Barbara (Heinzer) Sleeth, sons Michael and Cory, parents Lloyd and Olive Sleeth, and siblings: Garold Dean Sleeth, Pearl Edwin Sleeth, Carol Farris, and Barbara Sleeth.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2022 Walnut Creek Church South, 3516 SE 14th Street, Des Moines, IA 50320. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2022, also at the church, and will be followed by burial at Avon Cemetery, Avon Lake, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Gilbert.
