Ka Yaw Hsa

Ka Yaw Hsa, age 36, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at her home in Des Moines. Ka Hsa was born on May 20, 1985 in Pway Baw Lu, Thailand, daughter of Saw Ku Htoo and Naw Eh Wah. She immigrated to the United States with her sister, Mtee, in 2007. Ka Hsa became a US citizen in 2013 and she married her husband, Ah Klay, on July 30, 2016.

She worked as a translator and social worker for Lutheran Services in Iowa. She was passionate about work with refugees as they too adjusted to life in Des Moines. Community outreach was also very important to her. She and Ah Klay are active members of the Karen Baptist Church in Des Moines. Together they were very involved with the Karen youth. She will be sorely missed by her entire family, and at work, at church, and in the refugee community.

Ka Hsa was a graduate of Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Bible School with a Bachelors degree in Theological Studies. Ka Hsa enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. Playing the piano, singing, volleyball and shopping were other favorite activities.

She is survived by her husband, Ah Klay; parents, Ku Htoo and Eh Wah; sisters, Mtee Paw (Kwe Do), Paw Hsa, Hei Kpaw Wah ; and brothers, Soe Kmaw (Lar Kmaw), Mar Kaw, Mu Kpaw (Monday Moo); three nieces, two nephews and many other cousins and family members.

Funeral services will be held at the Karen Baptist Church, 6001 SE 5th St., Des Moines, at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2021. Family will greet guests one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University Ave. following the service.
