I have had some great teachers. Known several as friends. Dick was both. He could debate points with passion and empathy, always challenging without bullying. He opened minds, lit fires that still burn. And being fortunate enough to be on the first Foreign Study League trip he organized was also life changing. Much love and gratitude for his presence in my life.

I've always cherished my experiences taking Economics, Government and Advanced Economics from Dick Treman at Roosevelt High School. He was a role model and, in many ways, "a teacher of teachers" for those of us who went on to educational careers. With his easy-going style, he had a wonderful gift for intellectually engaging and challenging us students to examine economic philosophers and other political/economic issues. My career ultimately took me to public school teaching and international corporate training and development in 15 countries. I often reflected on Dick Treman's teaching style because he was so gifted in nurturing curiosity and a learning environment. Dick Treman was a genuine gift for all of us students fortunate to have had him as a teacher at Roosevelt.

Dear Ruth, David, Steve, John, and family:
It was with much sadness that I read in the paper that our good friend and colleague, Richard Treman passed away recently at Morning Star. I was fortunate to be the principal at Roosevelt from 1994 to 2001 and so much enjoyed Dick as a good friend and excellent teacher. Dick made a hugh difference in the lives of both students and staff as a teacher, tennis coach, advanced economics teacher, and with his many planned trips with students to Europe.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with each of you in the days that lie ahead.

Ruth, I am so sorry for your loss. You may remember that I was Dick's friend for several years at Drake and beyond. I always appreciated just being with Dick. We had so much fun. I really enjoyed meeting your parents too. I feel like a small chunk of my past has died with Dick and that is a strange feeling. My best to all of you, Toni

"People. You can't have guns and butter." So stated Mr. Treman, ad nauseum, such that anyone who ever took his econ class will remember the declaration to this day. Few teachers had an impact on me like Mr. Treman. In 1972, was he really only 18 years older than us?! I went on to major in economics and enjoy a career in finance. Plus there was the Foreign Study League trips and we all know that 'what happens on an FSL trip, stays on an FSL trip'. Nuf said. Except to say "Thank you Mr. Treman." For your engaging teaching style and lifelong lessons. May you find a good tennis partner in heaven. One question. In heaven can you have guns and butter?

I was blessed to have also studied in his Advanced Economics class at Roosevelt. His laid back style of sitting on the desk top and talking to us about complex economic theory was so easy to be a part of. Little did I know I'd end up with a special degree in Economics from the Claremont Economics Institute in California and have a 30 year career post nursing as a Certified Financial Planner and help families and businesses achieve their economic goals.
He was a master and to this day I am so fortunate to have had him as a teacher. I also delivered his evening newspaper to his house on 42nd Street.
A great man who blessed us all. God bless you Mr Treman! Enter His gates with joy!

Mr. Treman's Advanced Economics class, where we read The Worldly Philosophers and learned about Karl Marx and Thorstein Veblen and
John Maynard Keynes was revelatory for me, making me aware that there are so many other possibilities for understanding our world. 45 years later I still think about this class, and wish every HS student could receive such a gift
