Service Details

Marilyn JoAn Iseminger was born 9 March 1935 in Guthrie Center, Iowa, to Stewart and Erma (Ely) Shroyer. She passed 11 December 2021 at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center.

She had two sisters, Norine Culver and Carol Schulte, who preceded her in death. She grew up west of Guthrie Center on her father's farm and graduated from Guthrie High School. On 12 September 1953, she married the love of her life, Gerald Lyle Iseminger. They had 3 children: Sondra (Richard) Carnahan, Debra (Malcolm) Chase, and Ronald Iseminger who died 25 August 2017. She had 9 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Marilyn began her career working for Equitable Insurance Company, then went to work for the Polk County auditor's, Engineer's offices, and VA Hospital as a secretary. Later she worked at the bulk mail center loading and unloading trucks with 80 lb. mail bags. She had to work Sundays at that job, and she hated not being able to attend church. A friend, Bob Short, worked with her there and often said he hated working with her on Sundays because she would be so mad, she would throw those bags all day long, never taking a break and he would be worn out but he couldn't stop because she was a lady and old enough to be his mother. He couldn't let her out-work him. Later she transferred to the Des Moines main post office in purchasing, where she was much happier. She had Sundays off. She retired from there when she was 62. Marilyn worked hard to provide for her family all her life.

She loved playing cards and pinochle and would get quite competitive. She and Gerald enjoyed riding their Goldwing motorcycle all over the country and going to the shows in Branson. She loved spending time with her family and holding her grandbabies. She enjoyed roller skating, which is where she met her husband. She was fond of telling the story of when Gerald was back visiting his parents after he was discharged from the Navy. He had a girlfriend he had met in San Diego and was planning on going back there after visiting his parents. Marilyn would get a twinkle in her eye and smile and say, “He never went back.” She also liked gardening and cooking for her family. Above all, she loved Heavenly Father and He loved her. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and will be truly missed. Those who were fortunate enough to know her and be blessed by her unselfish example of caring and concern, will never forget her. We know we will see her again!

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 16 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. The service will take place on Saturday, December 18 at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 721 E. 1st Street in Ankeny, with burial to follow at Elkhart Cemetery.
