Service Details

Phillip (Phil) Chiaramonte, 85, of Waukee, Iowa, passed from this life to his next on November 21, 2021, from congestive heart failure. He died at home, surrounded by his wife and daughters. Phil was born January 17, 1936, to Anthony and Carmella (Spagnolo) Chiaramonte in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from Tech High School in 1954, he served in the National Guard, earned an Associate degree from Grandview College, and was as an active member of First Church of the Open Bible where he met the love of his life, Mary Jones.

Phil’s career was spent working for the City of Des Moines in the Traffic and Transportation division for 36 years. He was recognized in the Des Moines Register as “a top-notch professional” when he retired in 1996. Phil lived a life of service, not only to Des Moines, but to his family, friends, and faith community. One of Phil’s biggest dreams was realized working alongside his brother Jerry as Chairman of the building committee for the Frank W. Smith Retirement Center, providing an affordable housing option in Beaverdale. His family is comforted knowing his life continues alongside his Savior, and his legacy of service remains.

Phil loved his family well. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Jones) Chiaramonte of Waukee, IA, and daughters Kathleen (Doug) Labertew of Middletown, KY, and Kristine (John) Carlile of Grimes, IA. He was the proud grandpa to: Katelyn (JD) Spurlin of Lancaster, KY; Emily (Brandon) Doyle of Louisville, KY; Jay Carlile of The Colony, TX; Jillian Carlile of Overland Park, MO; and Meredith Carlile of Grimes, IA; and great-granddaughter, Grace Doyle of Louisville, KY. He was big brother to JoAnn (Larry) Molenburg of Urbandale, IA, and Jerry (Renee) Chiaramonte of Waukee, IA, along with special nieces and nephews across the country. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Carmella Chiaramonte.

Phil was happiest enjoying family dinners that included a plate of Mary’s spaghetti and meatballs, attending church with lifelong friends, admiring classic cars, and listening to Gaither music performances.

At the end of his life, Phil received great comfort from his physicians, Unity Point Hospice nurses and aides, the Taylor House staff, and his care team from Friends Home Care and Hospice. Memorial contributions can be made to Unity Point Hospice or New Hope Assembly of God in Urbandale.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 3rd from 5 to 7pm at Hamilton’s Funeral Home at 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 4th at 12pm at Hamilton’s.
