William C. Hines, age 95, went home to be with his Lord on November 17, 2021. William was born on March 1, 1926, the son of Jack and Violet Hines.

William was a lifelong resident of Des Moines and attended East High School through the 11th grade. He proudly served in the United States Navy where he was an excellent gunman on the USS Castle Rock AVP35. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, William was united in marriage to Hazel Hindal on June 7, 1946, at her parents’ home on the east side of Des Moines.

William trusted Christ as his personal savior and dedicated his life to serving God. He was baptized at Grandview Park Baptist Church and was an active member of Altoona Regular Baptist Church over the years.

William was a skilled mechanic who owned and operated a garage in Fort Des Moines for 30 years. After selling the garage in 1986, he went to work for DMACC an as educator in their automotive program. William also drove a shuttle truck for Penske Truck Rental for many years. In 2005, he retired from his working career.

In retirement, William and Hazel spent their winters in Arizona for more than 15 years. He enjoyed auto racing, especially the Indianapolis 500, as well as hunting, fishing, camping, and tinkering with cars.

William is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Hazel Hines; sons, Dennis (Joyce) Hines and Randy (Gale) Hines; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Betty (Archie) Hindal and other loving family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Hines, and sister, Jacqueline Olson.

Services will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021, at Altoona Regular Baptist Church, 803 3rd Avenue SW in Altoona, IA. Visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m. with the service to begin at 11 a.m. William will be laid to rest at Mitchellville Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Altoona Regular Baptist Church or Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura, Iowa.
