Ethelyn Jones

Ethelyn Jones (Sarge), 88, died peacefully at Wesley Acres on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

Ethelyn was born on January 18, 1921 to Arthur Jefferson and Jennie Mae Gillaspie near Albia, IA. Ethelyn was raised in Albia and graduated from Albia High School in 1939. Ethelyn married her high school sweetheart, Robert Jones on June 24, 1945. After her marriage Ethelyn moved to Des Moines. She worked as a welder at Solar Aircraft during WWII. After the war, she was a clerk at Heaven to Seven clothing store.

Ethelyn enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, gardening, reading, house boating on the Mississippi with family and friends, and photo snapping. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for more than 58 years.

Ethelyn was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Jennie Gillaspie; brothers, Francis and Gene Gillaspie; husband Robert Jones in 2005; and granddaughter Gabrielle Jones. She is survived by her children, Bob Jones Jr. (Judy) of Urbandale, Vicky Anderson (Dan) of Winterset, and Richard Jones (LeeAnn) of Des Moines. Ethelyn is leaving six grandchildren, Tammy Moberg of Winterset, Craig Moberg of Des Moines, Jennifer Heinen (Jeff) of West Des Moines, Angie Martin (Bryan) of Grand Forks, ND, Christy Jones of Urbandale and Kate Thilges (James) of Cedar Falls and nine great-grandchildren, Tucker and Mason Cooper, Haley and Madison Heinen, Pearson, Evan and Kellen Martin and Gabrielle and Paxton Thilges.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 19, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. from Christ United Methodist Church, 5723 Franklin Ave., Des Moines.

Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery following the memorial service. A reception will be held after the burial at Christ United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Christ United Methodist Church.
