Steven E. Potter
November 09, 2021
Steven Edward Potter, age 75, went peacefully with the Lord on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. Steve was blessed with a great sense of humor and every time you saw him, he was good for a great laugh or two. Steve was a father who cherished his children, Stacy Potter, Scott Potter, Brian Potter, and Stephanie Potter-Jurgens, so much in this life that his spirit will live on within them forever. Even death is not powerful enough to erase a father’s love. His grandchildren were the light of his life and when they grew old enough, he taught them inappropriate jokes, shared with them life lessons, and kept all of the secrets from their parents that he promised to. We will miss his smile, his laughter, and his love of family and friends.
Steve was born October 22, 1946. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1963-1969 aboard the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier. He was a truck driver throughout his career, driving for many companies including American, Crete, and USF Holland. He was a proud lifetime member of Teamsters Local 147. After retiring, Steve became a driver for the school district and loved delivering free lunches to the parks for all of the kids in the summer. He had a generous heart and donated to many charities that were important to him. Steve was truly a jokester and enjoyed putting smiles on the faces of all those who were blessed to have known him. Above all else, he treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by his favorite four-legged furry companion, Princess.
He is survived by his children, Stephanie Jurgens (Wes Dorsch), Scott (Megumi) Potter, and Stacy (Lu) Potter; grandchildren, Anthony, Layton, Ashlynn, Neil, Kari, Parker, and so many others he considered as his “own” children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Eugene (Sandra) Potter, Dennis Alatorre, and Jo Ann Alatorre; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and many special friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and Justino Alatorre and his son, Brian Potter.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service with military honors will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20, 2021, also at Hamilton’s.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Steve.

Stephanie, I am sorry for the passing of your dad. From the few months I met you, when I broke my foot, you definitely have an amazing sense of humor, confidence, and compassion you evidently inherited from your dad. I was telling Dennis about my foot when he figured out you were my nurse. He is so proud of you and the wonderful person you are! You obviously have great genes! I pray God to give your family peace and comfort.

Dennis, I remember years ago when I came out to the warehouse, the stories you would tell of the fun, wisdom, and brotherly love you two shared! I am sorry for your heartache of the loss of your brother, but so happy you both know you will be together again in God's Holy Kingdom!

Steve you were a great mentor for me when I worked with you at USF. Brother you will be missed. You were strong man that cared about the working man and his family as you did about yours. Until we meet again Brother.
