Dean L. Botts, 78, died peacefully October 16, 2009 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1707 8th Street SW in Altoona.

Dean was born October 11, 1931 in Hampton, Iowa to Thelma and John Botts. He graduated from Hampton High School, and then joined the Air Force serving in the Korean War. He later went on to play football at Wartburg College. He was a coach and teacher for many years at Scranton, Hamburg, Colfax, and Southeast Polk High Schools. He was a woodworker and metal etcher, liked to play golf, and watch the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, AZ for the past 12 years. He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross, the VFW and the NEA.

Dean is survived by his wife Alice; his children: Mike (Danette) Botts of Newton, and Mary (Chris) Larson of Eau Claire, WI; his grandchildren: Jon Botts of New York, Kristin Botts of Cedar Falls, Erica Larson of Germany, and Brita, Brynn, and Molly Larson all of Eau Claire; his brothers: Virgil (Dorothy) and Larry (Sandy) Botts; and his sister, Velma Riggins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Veloy; and his son-in-law Jay Schnautz.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Church of the Cross or the Mitchellville Public Library in loving memory of Dean.
