Joseph L. Oakley

Joseph Lee Oakley (nickname Spudy), age 63, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Joe was born February 9, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa to Norman H. Oakley and Ruth E. Allen. Joe accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior at a young age. He graduated from Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California in 1976. He served in the United States Navy from 1976 to 1978 aboard the USS Knox.

Joe’s nickname was Spudy. He loved his family above all else. Joe liked music, cars, and watching old movies. He was an avid reader and liked writing poetry.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Norman H. Oakley and Ruth E. Allen, three sisters Wanda (Candy) Oakley, Monica Oakley Dickens and Pamela Oakley.

He leaves behind one sister Rebecca Shumpert (brother-in-law Leroy), one step-sister Marsha Love, nephew Kenneth Oakley, five nieces Delonda Oakley, Trevanna Fowler, Kala Jefferson, Ebony Marks and Hope Ivory, and a host of great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, two aunts, three uncles and many cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Family will greet guests one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the Veterans Administration and the staff at Pleasant Hill Residential for their care of Joe over the years.
