Service Details

Dennis Ryan, age 73, passed away peacefully Friday, October 29, 2021 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure.

Dennis was born November 27, 1947 to Ray and Betty (Miller) Ryan. He was a Des Moines resident his entire life. He attended Des Moines Tech High School. Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Jane, in May of 1965. Their son, Dennis Jr., soon followed, and daughter, Janell, a few years later.

He worked for Employers Mutual Casualty Company as a CAD software drafter. His passion was anything with wheels. He was a gear-head and a master mechanic. Dennis was a member of the Camaro Club, National Bucket T Association, Mopar Club, and participated and went to the Good Guys Car Show. He loved collecting trains and cars, and was proud of two hot rods that he custom built. He custom painted model trains, and loved taking day trips with Nancy to visit and take photos of old train depots.

Denny lost his wife Nancy after 44 years in 2010. He missed her dearly and spoke often that he was ready to be with her again. After a long battle with CHF he chose to enter into hospice in October where he passed away the day after his wife’s birthday. The family finds comfort knowing this was the best gift he could give his wife. May they both continue to take those day trips and watch over the family.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Jr. (Karen) Ryan; daughter, Janell (Alan) Barton; sister, Gee Gee (Randy) Mireles; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other loving family and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Ryan and his parents, Ray and Betty Ryan.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 18, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with a graveside service at Laurel Hill Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the American Legion Hall, 2211 E 42nd Street, Des Moines, after the burial.
