Michael A. Tompkins

Michael Allen Tompkins, age 62, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021.

Mike was born May 25, 1959 to Ed Tompkins and Barbara Oxenreider in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up in Indianola and graduated from Indianola High School in 1978. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1978 to 1993, eight years of which were on the submarine USS Billfish. He attended Des Moines Area Community College and Des Moines University, earning an AAS Degree in Health Care Administration and a BS Degree in Health Information Management. He was employed by the V. A. Hospital in Des Moines until his retirement in 2015.

He enjoyed fishing, target shooting, camping, reading, and outdoor work. Mike was a life-long learner. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Mike was a very active member of Christ the King Catholic Church and became a Benedictine Oblate.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Family will begin greeting guests at 9:00 a.m. Cremation will take place after the service. Private inurnment will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa at a later date.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne and his father, Ed Tompkins.

He is survived by his son, Edward A. Tompkins; granddaughters, Becca and Tori Tompkins; daughter, Heather Ann Tompkins; mother, Barbara Oxenreider; sisters, Debbie Rasko and Marcia Jacobs; and his special friend, Kris Beltrame.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or the Wounded Warrior Project in loving memory of Mike.
