Mary Lou Gates, 76, passed away on October 25, 2021, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born on April 11, 1945, to Verdell and Margary Salmon.

Mary enjoyed children, sewing clothing, reading, doing word puzzles, and traveling. She was known for her generous heart, always willing to give to anyone.

Mary is survived by her children, Frederick O. Gates, Jr., Roxanne Botkin, and Suzanne Gates; grandchildren, Cody, Austin and Amber Staley; great-grandchildren, Lucas Nissen, Angelita and London Staley; other extended family, Nancy Bahr, Bradley and Tracy Bahr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick O. Gates., Sr., son, Jason Gates; her parents and one sister.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2021 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Easter Seals, in loving memory of Mary.
