Susan Mathis Zaun
October 17, 2021
Susan Mathis Zaun, 80, passed away peacefully at her home on October 17, 2021 surrounded by her loving children. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 5-7 pm at Hamilton’s, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Funeral services at Hamilton’s will be on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 1:00 pm and will be livestreamed. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
Susan was born July 26, 1941 to Marjorie Dietz (Mathis) and Lloyd Stith. After attending and graduating from East High School in Des Moines, she married her sweetheart, Dick Zaun. Sue was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and businesswoman.
Both Sue and Dick had a great American entrepreneurial spirit which they proudly passed along to their children. They successfully owned and operated a John Deere dealership, Zaun Implement, Zaun’s Yogurt (voted best tasting yogurt in Iowa) and Seller’s Hardware. Sue ran and managed Zaun’s Yogurt for 5 years and then Seller’s Hardware for 18 years until her retirement.
Sue excelled at everything she did. She enjoyed decorating, gardening, horseback riding, swimming, snow and water skiing and just about anything to do with the outdoors. She was an outstanding hostess; she loved to cook for and entertain family and friends. Sue never met a stranger and welcomed all with her kindness and infectious smile.
Sue will be greatly missed by her children, Brad (Dede) Zaun, Angie (Melissa Hilboldt) Zaun and Becky Fisher; grandchildren, Zac (Laurie Lynch) Zaun, Bailey (Ryan) Messerer, Drew (Taylor) Zaun, Greyson and Devon Zaun, Jeremiah, Addie and Olivia Fisher; and her brother, Steve (Pam) Stith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; and her sons, Dennis and Jeff.
Sue’s family would like to acknowledge the incredible care provided by Sue’s nurses, Charity Tucker, Linda Tallam, Yvette Nyamugisha and Betty Bometts. Also the care provided by Unity Point Hospice.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Rising Daisies in honor of Sue Zaun (risingdaisies.org). Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Where do I start. Sue and Dick were in my life from a tender age. I met them as the thirteen year old best friend of their daughter, Becky. As I was frequently at their home, they became like a second set of parents to me. I never felt anything but warmth and hospitality from them, Angie, and Brad as Becky's friend throughout high school. The home Sue made will always hold a magical place in my heart of comfort, beauty, and peace. So many good memories. And she treated me like one of her own. I will never forget her, and am so glad I was able to see her again in 2015, and stay at her home one last time. Rest in love and light, Sue. My heart is broken along with those of the scores of others who love you, too.
