Lisle Henry Shires
October 14, 2021
Lisle Henry Shires, 82, of West Des Moines, Iowa, died on October 14, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Lisle was born on a farm near Elliott, Iowa, to Alice and Lester Shires. He attended Elliott Schools participating in many activities while excelling in track and was active in the Elliott Methodist Church.
Lisle graduated from Drake University, active in student government, majoring in business and radio and television. He ran track and cross country until asthma forced him to stop. He continued his love of track by volunteering for the Drake Relays for more than 30 years and was named to the official’s wall of fame.
Upon graduation, Lisle moved to Milwaukee where he was employed by a television station. A year later a news position became available at WHO in Des Moines where he worked part-time while in college.
While on vacation the following year he met and became attracted to Julia Everhart. Julia says she was attracted to his ‘56 Chevy Convertible. They were married in 1964 at Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines and have been active members ever since. Lisle was on many different committees and following his retirement, volunteered nearly every day until his stroke in 2007.
Lisle is survived by his loved and loving family, wife Julia; children, Kathleen Alexander (Dan) and Christopher Shires (Sarah); grandchildren, Zach, Josh, Henry, Norah and Faith; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Paul (Pat) and Dale (Helen).
Funeral services will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove Ave. in Des Moines, IA on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation prior from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Our deepest condolences to Julia and the family. I will surely miss Lisle's smile and his presence on our monthly Zoom get-togethers. Tim and I consider ourselves blessed to have known Lisle over the years and the kindness both he and Julia showed us. Lisle always had a great story to share or fun practical joke for us. We shared the love for the Drake Relays with him and we looked up to him for his expertise in so many areas of life. We will surely miss you my friend. Tim and Trina

Tributes to and memories of Lisle Shires rightly focus on what a fine person he was gracious, thoughtful, helpful. For my part I remember what a joy it was to have Lisle Shires teach a course for us at the School of Journalism in the early/mid 1970s when I was the dean there. And I remember how he was part of the team that helped bring TV coverage into Iowa courtrooms.
Still, we remember Lisle more for who he was, and what he did was a bonus to knowing him.

I met Lisle and Julia when I was working at the Healthy Living Center. I have to say that he was one of the kindest most patient people that I have ever met. He never said a bad word about anyone. He was filled with so much wisdom. I loved to hear about his life , his family and his stories. I always learned so much from him. He and Julia were two of the kindest people that I came in contact with at the Healthy Living Center.
I was so happy to have that special time with both of them.

In 1976, Lisle Shires at WHO-TV taught me to understand media technology, and to meticulously care for equipment that makes good TV reporting eye-catching. I want to publicly thank him for his lifetime impact on my career. Lisle Shires was one of the smartest and kindest men who ever supervised me, and patiently explained how to keep my TV job, and use the camera to help make my hopes and dreams eventually come true.
Many years later when I was hired to create a student TV newscast at the U of Illinois, those policies became my grading rules to protect expensive new equipment that needed out last hundreds of students over many years to come.
Most importantly, Lisle Shires first taught me not to be afraid to identify and encourage people with great potential to showcase their unique talents.
I'll always be grateful this extraordinary, bright eyed & brilliant gentleman saw something in me, then worked patiently to see it fulfilled.
Thank you Lisle. My prayers now for your family, and God bless you eternally my friend. May your reward be great!

I worked with Lisle and Julia at the Healthy Living Center Y. Both of them were such good and kind souls. I used to help Lisle stretch in the pool. I had to be taught to closely watch his eyes because he wouldnt tell you if he was in pain. His demeanor of kindness and humility will always stay with me. He always showed respect to all people. And always asked about my family. He and Julia were so proud of their kids and grandkids and they were filled with Joy talking about them. Hugs and prayers to all of you. RIP Lisle ♥
