Cassie Smith

On October 4, 2021, Cassie Lee Smith from Des Moines, Iowa was called home to Heaven. Cassie passed early on Monday afternoon, October 4, 2021, at Mercy Hospital. Cassie was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 6, 1948, to Mary Ellen Sly and Melvin Albert Smith. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2021 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue, Des Moines. An outside visitation will be held at the cemetery from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. Casual attire is welcomed.
Surviving Cassie are her four children: Mary Wilson, Michael (Amanda) Smith, David Smith, and Dulcie Smith. Cassie is also survived by her nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and her brother, Marvin Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents. Cassie leaves behind many special friends, including her roommate of eleven years, Marla Lamb-Wilson.
Cassie attended Valley High School in West Des Moines and graduated in 1967. She proudly served in the Iowa National Guard. She later became an employee at Firestone in Des Moines. Cassie remained employed there for 33 years until her retirement.
Cassie was an active member of the Des Moines Chapter of the Harley Owners Group, the Des Moines Camera Club, USW Local 310, SOAR, A.B.A.T.E., and served as deacon of the West Des Moines Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA 50265.

Cassie was a great assest to learn from while working at Firestone, in the time before she retired. worked side by side on paint booths had many talks and laughs. she will be missed!!!

I will miss chatting with you at the Friday lunches, bike gatherings and especially your photos. You and your dog in a backpack inspired me to take my Juliet every where I went. Ride safe my friend and keep the shinny side up.

Cassie you will be greatly missed by the West family ! We always Loved seeing you at Bike events and you just loved seeing Bertha 'Biker' Dog and every time we pulled into a bjke event with Bertha you would always call out Bertha's name so she would know you was there. You Loved taking photo's and so did I and you and I spent alot of time taking photo's of birds and nice motorcycles and stuff at the iowa state fair. I could go on forever ! Love Ya and we will see each other again soon in heaven. Give Cuddles an big hug from Bev and I. God's Speed our dear friend ! Prayers going up for Marla and your family !

I will miss you Cassie. I loved seeing you on the bus ride to the fair and at blessing of the bikes . I will miss your hugs when we went our separate ways. I will miss your pictures of your trips and of the fair and flowers. Say hi to Rob for me. ❤💔😥

I have no words to ease the pain. I only have a heart that breaks with yours, arms that wrap around you and tears that fall with yours. Cassie will be missed by her ABATE family. She was an inspiration. She will be missed but will live in our hearts and memories forever. Love and prayers, Ma Bolen
