George D. Fischer
October 11, 2021
George Drennan Fischer died of a stroke on October 11, 2021, at his farm near Norwalk, Iowa. He was 95 years, 11 months, old. He was born on Des Moines’ east side on November 19, 1925. He attended grade school and junior high in both Des Moines and Tempe, Arizona, due to his father’s ill health. He graduated from East High in 1943, and received his BA degree from UNI. He taught school in Des Moines for over 20 years. At the same time, he farmed 120 acres East of Norwalk, where he built his first house.
Always seeking to improve things wherever he worked, he ran for and became President of the Des Moines Education Association (DMEA), and subsequently was elected to leadership at the state-level Iowa State Education Association (ISEA). Finally, he was elected President of the 3 million-member national teachers’ union, the National Education Association (NEA), in Washington, D.C. At NEA, he became one of three Iowans to make then-President Nixon’s “Enemies List”, of which he was very proud.
After NEA, he moved to Chicago to head up a new experimental classroom teachers’ project called the Educational Facilities Center (EFC). Upon completion of the five year project, he returned to Iowa to farm, build another home, and develop lakeside residential projects (Dutchman’s Landing on Lake Red Rock outside of Pella, and Easter Lake Park on Des Moines’ east side). While farming, he helped start the “No-Till” land conservation farming system, and was considered a pioneer in that movement. He was elected to the East High Hall of Fame.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Chas R. and Naomi Drennan Fischer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret (“Maggie”) Fischer, his four children, Chas J., Dan J., Drennan L. (Eric Bakker), and Chet F. (Kari) Fischer, and, his beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Winston, and Scarlett.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 12th, from 6-8 p.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, IA 50309. A Celebration of George’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 13th at 11:00 a.m., also at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Masks are recommended. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DMEA—George D. Fischer Scholarship Fund, 206 Center St., Des Moines, IA, 50309, or to the Salvation Army.

My condolences to Maggie, Drennan, Chet, and their families. Don and I were friends with George and Maggie for over 40 years. Although we lived in San Diego, we have visited back and forth in Iowa and Arizona. We spent many hours together at NEA past presidents dinners in many different cities. Although our children were older, we watched Drennan and Chet grow up and become the outstanding people they are. Don predeceased George, but I will continue to miss the conversations and good times with George, and continue my wonderful friendship with Maggie.

George was best friends with my cousin, Fred Nordgren. He gave the most moving eulogy at Fred's funeral. I shall never forget his wonderful tribute to Fred. My blessings to the family. George was a wonderful man!

So glad I got to meet George. He had so many amazing stories to tell. But he was always more interested in hearing the stories of family and friends. He will be missed by all.

George was a great man and I know he will be missed by anyone who had the opportunity to meet him and be around him. George taught me so many lessons about life that I carry with me every day. George was so successful and so busy in so many aspects of his life, yet he always made time to talk with me, share his feedback and pass along his wisdom. He was so important to so many people yet if you spent 10 minutes with him you knew his authenticity was real, his humility was natural and his interest in you was genuine. I am so very grateful that when my family moved to Norwalk in the 5th grade that Chet became one of my best friends and that the entire Fischer family welcomed me into their lives with love and care. I owe George so much; he has helped make me who I am, and I am truly blessed for knowing him. He will always be remembered.

George was such an engaging man. I have fond memories of George, Maggie and their kids coming to visit the Donahues over the years. As an educator, I am truly grateful for Georges influence with NEA. He had a rich and amazing life. Much love to the family. Rest in peace, George.

George and Maggie are some of our oldest and dearest friends
George was the ultimate story teller and we loved to listen. One of my favorite memories of George was when my five year old granddaughter was sitting on his lap and looked up and asked him if he would marry her when she grew upl I thinks lots of people would "marry" George just to have him in their lives.
He was a very dear friend and have too many memoris to write them all down. Just that we loved him.

My fondest memory was George racing his Camaro Iroq Z from Norwalk to Ute for Grandma and Grandpa's 50th wedding anniversary and we laughed so hard because I assumed at your age you would never do that. I love spending time just reflecting and chatting about our lives. Always with a smile and a laugh. You will be missed greatly. May you rest in peace and continue to fly at record speed.
