Richard "Rick" L. Nelson
October 09, 2021
Richard “Rick” Lee Nelson, age 63, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021.
Rick (also known as Ferd, Batman, Uncle Dudley, and The Candy Man) was born July 22, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a jack-of-all-trades and even had business cards printed to read “fixing other people’s repairs”. Rick worked in the auto industry for many years repossessing vehicles. He also worked for the U. S. Postal Service maintaining their machinery and loved doing side jobs with computer repair or IT services. If you had a computer issue, Rick was who you would call. He was a very generous and helpful person. He always had his tools handy, and would fix anything he saw that was loose or broken. He was a collector and everything had a use. He could refurbish or repurpose anything.
He is survived by his love, Wanona O’Reilly; children, Tiffany, Tosha, and Travis; grandchildren, Matthew, Kaylee, and Leah; siblings, Jack Carra, Phil Carra, Lucy Phipps, Frank Carra, and Suzie Hensley; aunts and uncles, Jim and Sharon Nelson, Jerry and Alice Nelson, John and Bonna Nelson, and Arlis Cudo; and many nieces, nephew, cousins, other loving family members, and friends.
Rick was preceded in death by parents, Janice Nelson and Lee and Eva Nelson; first wife, Norma Nelson; and his granddaughter, Stormie Lynn Nelson.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2021, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with burial at West Cemetery in Panora, Iowa.

My condolences to Rick's family. Rick was an awesome friend. I worked with Rick at the Des Moines NDC. I would see Rick wandering around my work area looking for me. When would see me, he would ride up on his maintenance bike and pull out a bag of candy (always my favorites) and offer me some. Then we would talk for quite awhile about old tractors, cars or what was going on at work. Rick (AKA "The Candy Man") will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

To Rick"s family my condolences. I met Rick at the Bulk Mail Center now the BMC. To know Rick and work with him was to here stories you won't hear anywhere else, to have a fierce friend, to know integrity and honesty. Working with Rick was fun because he didn't know 'can't' and wouldn't accept 'No' . So it is time to 'take a break' Rick, that was probably the only thing you weren't good at. A lot of people will miss you including myself.

I enjoyed working with you Rick. Your photographic memory was amazing. You could remember prints and schematics. Glad to have been your coworker, supervisor and friend. Enjoyed staying in touch with you. You inspired people to laugh no matter the situation. Your supervisor/manager jokes were the best. You were always helpful at work and away from work. Miss ya Rick !
