David Bates Vetter
September 21, 2021
David Bates Vetter, 84, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Deerfield Retirement Community in Urbandale. Dave was born to Frank S. and Margaret A. Vetter on November 4, 1936, in Waukon, Iowa, later moving with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he grew up. After graduating from McKinley High School in 1954, Dave attended Stanford University before transferring to the University of Iowa, where, as a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1958. He then joined the family lumber business, Vetter-May Lumber, overseeing operations at the Stanwood, Iowa location. During this time Dave married Carole A. Prather, the mother of his two sons, Jim and Joe.
Dave had studied the clarinet from an early age, and after three years in the lumber business his passion for music was too much to overcome, so he and Carole packed up and headed for New York City. There Dave attended the Mannes College of Music, earning a second degree, Bachelor of Music in clarinet, in 1968. In 1972, he and his family moved to City Island in the Bronx, which would remain Dave’s beloved home for nearly 50 years. While Dave and Carole divorced in the mid-1990s, they remained friends.
Upon graduation from Mannes, Dave began a career in music education, teaching high school band at several schools within the New York City education system until his retirement in 1993. While Dave’s formal career was in teaching, his musical life didn’t end there. Over the years he regularly performed with and led numerous jazz and concert bands throughout the New York area, and was admired by fellow musicians for his mastery of the saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Dave passed on his love of music to his sons and grandchildren.
Dave also had many hobbies. He was an avid swimmer, swimming daily in the Long Island Sound (with a memorable cameo in the movie “City Island”), and a passionate gardener. Upon retiring from teaching, Dave turned his love of gardening into a second career with the New York Botanical Garden, where he worked in the Family Garden for nearly 25 years.
Dave’s life was defined above all by an unwavering devotion to his family and steadfast loyalty to his friends. As one longtime friend said, speaking for so many, “Everyone liked Dave.” He will be remembered by all who knew him for his overwhelming kindness and generosity.
Dave is survived by his sons, James D. Vetter (Marcia) of Urbandale, Iowa, and Joseph K. Vetter (Lisa) of Bethesda, Maryland; sisters, Peggy Parks (Frank, deceased) of Denver, Colorado, and Martha Vetter of City Island, New York; granddaughters, Rachel Davis (Tim), Kirsten Gannon (Dan), and Emily Vetter, all of the greater Des Moines area; and nine great-grandchildren, three nieces, and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, with visitation held one hour prior to service time. The service will be live streamed. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated to the Mannes College of Music and New York Botanical Garden.

Dear Jim, Joe and family,
My family and I had the pleasure of knowing Dave, our acquaintance with him became a long and wonderful friendship. He was one of my best friends and I feel humbled to have known him. I fondly remember him saving "hot peppers" for me from the Family Garden because he knew my love for spicy foods. We spoke on the phone weekly, and we had many early morning weekend breakfasts at the diner. It was here that he shared snippets of his life, and his family and he learned about mines as well. He was a friend who was always willing to listen and offer advice. Dave will be truly missed. He was loved by my children and I. From my family to yours our deepest sympathies.

Dave was such a steady and important presence in the Family Garden...the one with the farming know-how and the hard work ethic and also one who was generous with his smile and a kind word. I feel fortunate to have known him. He touched many lives.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dave from working, for years, at the NYBG Family Garden, and also from living near him on City Island in The Bronx. Sometimes, as I drove along City Island Ave., I would see Dave going into the City Island Diner to get coffee before going to the Family Garden (the FG was often where I was also headed). We ran into each other so often because of work and neighborhood, I would sign off with Dave by saying "I'll see you either at the garden or on the Island." I have so many wonderful memories of Dave. Beginning with his smile, which was always so lovely and sweet to see. Yes, I miss Dave's smile and I miss Dave. My heartfelt condolences to his entire family. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and I wish you peace and comfort during this time of loss.

Dave is a big part of the Family Garden. I have many beautiful memories of him, and always with that big warm smile. He gave me my first bunch of swiss chard! I was unfamiliar with it at that time. He kept on cutting leaves until I got a big bouquet! I thought they were getting too big. He explained that when you cook it, it will not be much, just perfect for a family of 5. Boy, wasnt he right! To this day, my family loves swiss chard! We learned how to be creative with cooking. We especially love swiss chard lasagna. Thank you Dave for introducing me to swiss chard! I will always remember your warm, welcoming smile. I will plant a swiss chard in your name. May you rest in peace!
PS Your pickles are unmatched!

I really missed Dave at the Garden. He was always so kind to me and helped me out when I first started volunteering and was feeling my way. He knew so much but you never felt awkward asking him questions.
Sometimes we would just chat and joke around. He really loved the Garden and worked hard towards keeping it beautiful. I also loved the pickles. He was a beautiful person. May he rest in peace

I worked with Dave for many years at the Family Garden. It was always a pleasure to share a few words and a smile with him . He is sorely missed. Ill never taste a pickle as good as Daves pickles, the balance of salt, garlic and spices, fermented to perfection! Im the lucky one to have been able to call him my friend. With deep and sincere sympathy to his family and friends, Lydia

Dear Jim, Joe and Family,
To know Dave is to love him. I knew him from my 13 years of teaching at the Botanical Gardens . I can still see him sitting at one of those tiny childrens tables eating the bagged lunch he brought for himself every day. His precise attention to all details botanical was an inspiration. He gave me my first Cherokee Purple heirloom tomato plants - heavenly!
Dave had the most infectious smile and bright, shining blue eyes. I can still hear him playing in the concerts at the gardens. I did see his cameo in City Island. I cant imagine any of us at the Garden who didn't! He was talented in every possible way.
It was so loving of you to bring him close to you for his final years. Bless you for making him as comfortable as possible. I am so sorry you have lost him. Ill miss his presence on this earth. But his bright-eyed spirit lives on in all those he touched throughout his life. And that's a wonderful gift to us all. Please tell him I loved him.

I just want to tell you what a joy it was to get to know your father. My mom, Norma Hill, was so grateful for his friendship through the last 4 years.
Your dads smile would light my heart. I would spend a lot of meal times with my mom and the bonus was getting to know Dave and many of the other friends that were made there.
We lost our mom just hours before you lost Dave. Im really going to miss my time with all of them at Deerfield.
Prayers for all of you as you go through this difficult time.

Oh Dave, you were a true highlight of my time at the New York Botanical Garden! Your commitment to keeping everything in top top shape was so old school and we all loved and respected you for it! Your smile, your laugh, your old school lawn mower, your deep rumbly voice are all still fresh in my mind. Dave, you will never be forgotten. Thank you for the sunshine you brought to the Family Garden. Your memory will live on with me and all you touched forever. With Love, Kelly McLane
