Tyrone K. Tillman

Tyrone Kevin Tillman, “Tuck,” age 56, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2021, at home in West Des Moines, Iowa.

He was born February 17, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, to Franklin and Almeda (Robinson) Tillman. He was known to be a humble, honest, and gentle giant. At a young age, he accepted Christ into his life, his home church, Second Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. His late uncle George Wesley Robinson was the minister and founder. In 1983 he graduated from Fenger High School, where he was an outstanding All-American basketball player. After high school, he attended Chicago State University and then the University of Nebraska at Omaha. While enrolled at UNO, he played center for the UNO Mavericks and met his wife Kathy as she ran track there as well. He later finished his degree at Chicago State University.

Tyrone worked for the Chicago Park District, St. Joseph’s Carondelet Child Care Center, and then with group homes in Illinois and Nebraska. He was most recently employed at Fort Des Moines as a residential officer, where he continued helping and changing many people’s lives.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Harris; daughters, Tyra and Kaseia Tillman; siblings, Raymond (Dawn), Curtis (Michelle), Wayne, Patrick (Patricia), Christopher, and Brenda; close family friend, Lance Lewis; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

Tyrone was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James Chester Robinson, Victor Robinson, and Jerome Tillman.

Services in Des Moines will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. He will then be transported to Chicago for his final services and disposition there. Services in Chicago will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at Second Mt. Calvary Baptist Church 7401 S. Western Ave. Chicago, Illinois, with a viewing at 3:00 p.m., followed by service at 4:00 pm.
