Richard Mendenhall, age 83, passed away at his home on Monday, September 6, 2021 surrounded by his family. Richard was born the son of Landon and Hazel Mendenhall on October 6, 1937 in Martinsdale, Iowa.

Richard graduated from East High School, class of 1955 and went on to marry Delores Jean Smith in Des Moines, and to this union three children were born. After graduation, he enlisted in to the United States Army. Richard was one of the first Airborne Rangers, later known as a Green Beret and was honorably discharged in 1957. He then went on to continue his education at Iowa State University, where he studied architecture. Richard opened his computer software company known as RAM Systems in Des Moines and owned Mr. Bill’s Backdoor Bar later known as Johnny Mack’s until he retired in 1996.

Richard was an avid sports fan, he enjoyed socializing with friends, and spending time at Prairie Meadows. He was a proud Elks and Shriner member for many years.

He is lovingly survived by his children, Debbie (Danny) Grandstaff, Rick Mendenhall, and George (Gigi) Mendenhall; two grandchildren, Natasha and Colton; one great-grandchild, Kyson; and sister, LaDonna (Ray) Amsden.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife.

Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Richard’s home in Colfax, food and beverages will be provided.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in memory of Richard.
