Service Details

Larry Dean Dingman was born November 27, 1952 in Charleston, South Carolina to Billie Stout Dingman and Richard Dingman and passed away on September 8, 2020. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1971. After moving to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend college, Larry joined the Air Force and met Jackie Lazenby who he married in 1973. While stationed overseas they welcomed the birth of their daughter Melissa DeAnn. Following an honorable discharge from the military Larry pursued his lifelong love for music by working as a radio disc jockey, where he soon earned the reputation as the “Man with the Voice.”

In 1980 Larry moved to Norwalk to work for the U.S Postal Service, where his brother Mark was also employed. They welcomed their second daughter, Shannon Elizabeth shortly after this. As his career with the Post Office advanced, his background in communications and his work as a Disc Jockey placed him in the perfect position for Public Relations Officer. This career took their family to Chicago, Wichita, Washington, D.C. and finally Memphis, TN. By the time of his retirement he had held many titles including Crisis and Communications Director and Manager of Field Communication.

In May 2009 Larry married Tammy Meyer Piper in St. Thomas USVI and gained a bonus Daughter, Amanda and later a Son-in-Law Steve.

As an accomplished but modest guitarist, Larry was able to indulge his love of music in Memphis by listening to his favorite artists on Beale Street. He was a dependable supporter of the annual Blues Challenge, and was often in the audience of other Memphis music festivals.

Larry welcomed a Grandson, Chase in 2002 and a Granddaughter, Alexa in 2009 whom he loved very much and was so proud of. He was close to his Brother Mark and Sister-in-Law Becky and their Family and enjoyed trips with them and many fun visits together.

Larry loved to travel and was very fortunate to experience several wonderful trips to Africa and Europe with dear friends who had become like members of his & Tammy’s family. To know Larry was to love him. His professional successes were too numerous to mention. His warmth, generosity and humor were without equal. His love for his family, friends, pets and his community were deep and lasting. We are all better people for knowing Larry Dingman. Better for loving him, better for having him in our lives.

He was preceded in death by his Mother, Billie VanScoy, his Father, Richard Dingman and, half Sister, Jeanne Sanders, and Grandparents Raymond and Elsie Dingman.
