Laurence "Larry" Curttiss Schincke, Jr.
September 02, 2021
Laurence "Larry" Curttiss Schincke, Jr., 60, died September 2, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital from Disseminated Histoplasmosis. He was born June 21, 1961, at SUI General Hospital (University of Iowa) Iowa City, Iowa to Mary & Laurence Curttiss Schincke, Sr.
Larry moved to Ankeny, Iowa in 1977. He met Cindi soon after as they lived across the street from each other. They married young in 1981 and that union brought their daughter, Megan. Together they moved to Denver, Colorado where Larry had an opportunity to play minor league AAA baseball and continue a love of rock climbing. Through life and circumstance, Cindi and Megan returned to Iowa. Remaining in Denver, Larry met and married Rhonda DeSouza and together they had 3 children: Jacob, Caleb, and Katelyn. In the Fall of 2008, Rhonda passed away at the young age of 46.
In 2009, Larry reunited with Cindi and Megan. He moved home to Iowa with Katelyn in June 2010 bringing his families together. Larry and Cindi’s shared love of life allowed them to visit countless places in the U.S. and Mexico, often finding their way to live music. A great family man he never missed a ballgame, dance recital, or special school event for his children and grandchildren. He loved to celebrate any successes his family had.
He was a true gentleman and lived his life with honor and compassion. With his infectious smile and laugh people gravitated toward him and never wanted to leave. He had a magical way of making everyone feel special and important. He found joy in mentoring young people in his life, his sons, grandsons, their friends and countless others. He never let the tragedies of life change his kind and gentle soul, leaving a legacy of love, laughter and an unbreakable resiliency that is so uncommon in this world.
Larry was a hardworking man and took pride in everything he did. He worked as a General Property Manager at The Ford Warehouse in Des Moines, Iowa until he became sick in August 2021.
He was a United States Army Veteran, serving most of his time in Bamberg, Germany in the 2/2 ARC.
We will light a fire with the love he left behind and try our best to carry on, despite the hole his passing created in all our worlds. He taught us intentions are everything in this life and if you live with an open and loving heart, you have found the secret to happiness.
Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection commonly found in the Midwest but is often overlooked and misdiagnosed as other illnesses. It took his life much too soon. Although it was too late to save Larry, we know he would want us to bring awareness to this terrible disease so other families don’t have to suffer they way we have.
Left behind to mourn his passing is the love of his life, Cindi Doornenbal, children: Megan, Jacob, Caleb (Brooke), Katelyn Schincke, and Drew (Taylor) Doornenbal, grandchildren: Jackson, Samuel, and Sophia Raitt, Chera Schincke, Rayah and Finley Schincke, and Layla Doornenbal, his siblings: Patty Kerns, Deborah Huff, Jeff Schincke, Robbin Schincke, Matt Schincke and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm, Sunday, October 3, 2021, at The Chateau at White Oak in Cambridge, Iowa with US Army military honors. All friends and family are welcome.

I only knew Larry as a child. We looked for mischief in Danbury. Military life kept us away. May he have beautiful peace in his new home.
