Jim Rose passed away on Friday, August 27, at Every Step Bright Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 78. Jim was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Virginia (Hause) and Harold Rose on June 26, 1943.

Jim attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas where he was an avid swimmer. After high school, Jim joined the United States Navy. He was very proud of his service. He was a plank owner and served on board the U.S.S. Niagara Falls from 1967-1968, a veteran of the Vietnam War. Following his service, he attended the University of Kansas, and then began his working career as an accountant.

Jim loved everything to do with woodworking. He was a founding member of the Mid- Iowa Wood Carvers Guild, and launched the wood carving exhibit at the Iowa State Fair in the early 1980’s. He taught woodcarving classes from boy scouts to adult classes. In retirement, he worked at Home Depot, sharing his knowledge of tools, and craftmanship with others.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors; loving to fish and kayak. He also loved to travel, including his annual vacations to Jamaica, and riding his bicycle across the state of Iowa during RAGBRAI each year.

He was always fond of a good conversation, and never knew a stranger.

Survivors include his sons, Jason (Nicki) Rose and Justin (Nell Bang – Jensen) Rose; grandchildren, Noah, Natalie, Orla, Ashley, and Aaron and his significant other of 20 years, Sharon Allen.

Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve Rose, and beloved chocolate lab, Cassie.
