Richard Wesley Heck, III

Richard Wesley Heck III, 80, passed away August 3, 2021 at his home. He was born on February 23, 1941 to Frances and Richard W. Heck, Jr in Des Moines, IA.
Rick graduated from East High School Class of 1959; from William Penn College in 1964 with his Bachelor’s degree; and later from the University of Nebraska in 1979 with his Master’s. He devoted his career to education and worked as a principal, teacher and coach in Iowa and Nebraska. After leaving education, Rick enjoyed creating wooden sailboats and lighthouses. He was passionate about sailing on his boat, Acabar, at Lake Red Rock.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Marsha Watkins Heck; his son, Gregory Heck; his brother, Stephen (Linda) Heck; niece, Frankie; grandniece, Emma; his family of in-laws including Mark (Mary) Watkins and their children, Lindsey, Kelsea, and Hunter (Katie) Watkins; and a niece, Gina Watkins; and, his very best friend, Tom Sheppard.
The words of Maya Angelou capture the life-philosophy of Rick Heck, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Pearson Park Shelter, 1256 19th Street in West Des Moines, IA. The family welcomes stories, memories and photos to share during our casual gathering to honor the life of Rick Heck.

I have thought of Mr. Heck so many times since our family moved away from Iowa. He was a wonderful teacher (I was so fortunate to be in his home room) and an incredible coach. I still have pictures I took of him on the last day of school the year we moved. Rest in peace, lovely man.

MR. HECK WAS MY TEACHER and Coach at Louisa Muscatine Jr. HIGN SCHOOL from 1966 to 1968. He was a very Good Man in all aspects of life. The best Coach I ever had. A Big influence on my life. REST IN PEACE MR. HECK MY FRIEND

I was a second Greg student at Grandview school in Grandview Iowa. Mr. Heck was my teacher. We all loved him. He was so handsome and charming. One day when I was talking too much Mr. Heck punished me by making me wash the chalkboard after school. When I completed that chore I wrote all over the chalkboard with chalk. Little did I know I was just going to have to wash it again. It was a good year and I never forgot Mr. Heck.

We will miss Rick. Such a funny, smart, warm human being. It was hard not to smile around Rick. As Maya Angelou said, he is one who will be remembered for how he made a person feel warm and cared for. Thinking of you Marsha and Greg.

I was sad to hear of coach Hecks passing. He had a great influence on my life as I went on to teach and coach for 40 years. The memories of our 1969-70 football teams will live with me forever. I am also so thankful to coach for agreeing to coach our LHS baseball team in the summer 1971. We had gone 2 years with no baseball. My deepest sympathy to Marsha, Greg and all his family.

So sorry to hear this.I played for him at Lorhville.He was such a positive influence on my life.In 1975 Burke,Hardy and I drove to York and looked him up. Got to spend a great weekend with him and Sheppard.Great memories.Sympathy to all his family.

I received a call tonight from fellow Lohrville High School classmate, Mike Burke, regarding Coach Heck's passing. My first thought was how young he was. Of course, we've all aged more than we realize. Coach Heck was a vibrant and capable coach and individual who impacted so many in many ways. I'll always remember him with fondness and wish only the best to his family and friends during this time of loss.
