Leslie "Kaye" Matheny
July 26, 2021
Kaye Matheny was born October 31, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Gerald and Phyllis Dowell. She passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2021, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Bob and Kaye met at Trails End Western Store in 1971. They were united in marriage October 28, 1972 and began establishing their family. Angie first in 1975, Amy second in 1976, and their last, Andrea, in 1983. Kaye’s greatest accomplishment in life was her family; treasuring every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan and was always in their corner. Kaye never missed an event and had the hand-written schedule and planner to prove it…sometimes traveling to 5 games a day all in different cities. On the rare occasion she had a free day, you could always find her by the pool enjoying time with her family.
Kaye was always up for an adventure and loved to travel, especially to the beaches in Florida, fishing trips to Canada, and to the wineries in Tennessee. Because she was scared of flying, the family always drove which allowed them to see the sights along the way, something she enjoyed just as much.
She was a woman of strong faith and greatly appreciated her Bible studies.
Kaye is survived by her loving husband of nearly 49 years, Bob; daughters, Angie (Ryan) Ortlund, Amy (Mark) Sickels, and Andrea (Adi) Radoncic; grandchildren, Tanner, Hunter, Brynn, Beckett, Cael, Bryce, Grady, Cooper, and Berkley; brothers, Jerry Ray (Kathy) Dowell, Doug (Donnis) Dowell, and Randy (Cheryl) Dowell; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other loving relatives and many special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Phyllis Dowell, and parents-in-law, Richard and Shirley Matheny.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10AM, Monday, August 2, 2021, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Sunday, August 1, from 5-7PM.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Kaye.

So very sorry to see the sad news that Kaye had passed. I worked with Kaye at The Principal and remember fondly our days as administrative correspondents. We had such a good time working together. Kaye was a beautiful person inside and out. We shared many laughs and stories about our children. Please know the family is in my thoughts and prayers. Look to God for the peace and comfort only He can provide. Keep all the memories close to your heart.

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. Kaye and her family lived next door to us during our junior high and high school days. We spent a lot of time together playing duets on my piano, having sleep overs, and visiting Park Fair Mall. We also ended up working at Principal for many years. Prayers to the entire family. Hold on to all the great memories. She was a wonderful person. ❤
