Leslie "Kaye" Matheny
July 26, 2021
Kaye Matheny was born October 31, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Gerald and Phyllis Dowell. She passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2021, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Bob and Kaye met at Trails End Western Store in 1971. They were united in marriage October 28, 1972 and began establishing their family. Angie first in 1975, Amy second in 1976, and their last, Andrea, in 1983. Kaye’s greatest accomplishment in life was her family; treasuring every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan and was always in their corner. Kaye never missed an event and had the hand-written schedule and planner to prove it…sometimes traveling to 5 games a day all in different cities. On the rare occasion she had a free day, you could always find her by the pool enjoying time with her family.
Kaye was always up for an adventure and loved to travel, especially to the beaches in Florida, fishing trips to Canada, and to the wineries in Tennessee. Because she was scared of flying, the family always drove which allowed them to see the sights along the way, something she enjoyed just as much.
She was a woman of strong faith and greatly appreciated her Bible studies.
Kaye is survived by her loving husband of nearly 49 years, Bob; daughters, Angie (Ryan) Ortlund, Amy (Mark) Sickels, and Andrea (Adi) Radoncic; grandchildren, Tanner, Hunter, Brynn, Beckett, Cael, Bryce, Grady, Cooper, and Berkley; brothers, Jerry Ray (Kathy) Dowell, Doug (Donnis) Dowell, and Randy (Cheryl) Dowell; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other loving relatives and many special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Phyllis Dowell, and parents-in-law, Richard and Shirley Matheny.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10AM, Monday, August 2, 2021, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Sunday, August 1, from 5-7PM.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Kaye.

Kaye is someone you never forget. She was my daughter's "Blue Bird" leader when we first moved to Des Moines. She and Bob were so kind and welcoming to us. One of my fondest memories is sleeping in a shopping mall for a " Blue Bird" event. Kaye and Bob were always so involved in their family. Bob, Angie, Amy, and Andrea I am so very sorry for your loss. She was so special. ( Penny Weiss)

Angie, Bob, Amy, Andrea and all the family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Kaye's smile was contagious. I remember it from elementary school. I never really understood why the best ones seem to be taken too soon. Sending hugs and much love to all of you. May God comfort you during these difficult times and always.

I knew Kaye throughout my childhood as we advanced through Saylor Center elementary school, then Woodside Junior High and finally Saydel High School. She was a beautiful young lady who was the backbone of the Spirit team at Saydel. She obviously did a great job of cheering on her children and grandchildren. Bob and Kaye were so lucky to find each other. My condolences the the family. She left a great legacy. We will miss you Kaye.

My heart goes out to all of you. Bob and Kaye were family when Ang played volleyball for me. I remember Kaye driving us to the Colorado tournament. She was a good woman and the love of Bob's life. I suspect she spoiled her grandchildren. Love you guys!

Kaye was always a shining light and had a smile for everyone she met.
I remember when I went to Sweden in the summer 1969, that she was one who always kept me in the know of what was happening back home in the states.
A beautiful woman with a beautiful soul who will be missed by everyone.
RIP Kaye! You will be a beautiful Angel for Gods work!
Prayers to all of her family as they go through life without her here physically!
