Service Details

Hoan Van Cam, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Des Moines surrounded by his family.

Hoan was born February 2, 1930 in Banhai, Muongla, Sonla, North Vietnam to father, Kinh Van Cam and mother, La Thi Cam.

While living in Vietnam, he was a well-respected professor of woodworking and carpentry. His favorite hobby was video-recording any and all family events. As time passed, he learned to convert VHS tapes to CDs in order to preserve memories and bring people together. Family was everything to Hoan. He had the biggest heart and attended all family gatherings from funerals to parties and was always assisting. Everyone in the community called him “Ai”, meaning Dad, as he was looked upon affectionately by everyone. Hoan was the peacekeeper in the family. He always made sure everyone was happy and peaceful and taught all of the grandchildren good morals. He loved his independence and enjoyed driving to visit people or to get snacks or treats for his grandchildren. He will be remembered by all who knew him as always having a smile on his face.

He is survived by his sisters, Thong Kham and Hai Cam; sons, Houng Cam (Hai) of Hawaii, Bounmy Cam (Noy) of Washington state, Nokham Cam (Phone) of Washington state, Arounkhone Cam (Poui) of Iowa, and Colin Cam of Louisiana; daughters, Sinthasone Souvannachit (Toui) of Iowa, Symone Muongmany (Pond) of Washington state, Davone Cam (Gop) of Iowa, and Davanh Soulinthavong (Thong) of Oklahoma; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Hoan was preceded in death by his brothers, Yong Cam and Khoua Cam; wife, Cuom; daughters, Lim Cam and Loa Cam; granddaughter, Stephanie Pathammovong; great-granddaughter, Ella Inthawa Muongmany; and parents, Kinh and La Cam.
