July 19, 2021
Pamela Kay Cullen passed away peacefully at her home on July 19, 2021. She was born July 31, 1961 to Flo (Anderson) and R. Larry Parrott in Marshalltown, Iowa.
After graduating from high school in 1979, she went on to Mercy College where she received her registered nursing license. During this time she married Charles Schafer of Adair and was blessed with two daughters, Nicole and Kate, whom she loved so dearly.
She held a variety of positions in the healthcare industry over the years, with the last and longest as nurse manager of clinical staffing at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines before retiring following a double lung transplant in 2007.
The epitome of a fighter, she faced many health struggles throughout the years, and did so with a smile on her face and hope in her heart. Repeatedly beating the odds, her courage and resilience was an inspiration to those who knew her and a true testament of her character. An active member of St. Mark Lutheran church for 23 years, she was steadfast in her faith with a deeply rooted love for God and her church, where she served altar guild for many years.
Pam is survived by her daughter, Kate Schafer; stepfather, Duane Andersen; brothers, Doug Griffin and Nick (Pam) Parrott; sister- in –law, Joni Griffin; and many friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nicole Schafer, who was undoubtedly anxiously waiting to welcome her home, as well as her parents, nephew, Chad Parrott and niece, Hadleigh Griffin.
Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2021 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1105 Grand Avenue in West Des Moines. Family will greet friends at 10:30 am with fellowship to continue after the service. Burial will take place at a later date.

Heaven has truly gained a angel. On this earth for too short of time. I was very blessed to know Pam. You only had to talk to her for a short time to be awed by her grace and beauty inside and out. I am a better person for having known her.
