Aina Brizga
July 17, 2021
Aina Brizga, age 87, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at her home in Des Moines. Aina was born in Latvia on July 22, 1933 to Zanis and Ieva (Alma) Brizga and was an only child. In 1943 Aina and her parents moved to Germany during World War II, and in 1953 Aina came to the United States by ship with her parents. Aina liked to talk about her experience being on the ship and going though Ellis Island. Aina settled with her parents in Des Moines and lived with her parents until they both passed. Aina then lived with roommates in supported community homes until her death.
Aina was a member of First Lutheran Church and appreciated the love and support church members gave her throughout the years. Aina especially enjoyed the cards and gifts given to her and the friends who visited her in her home. These visits often gave Aina the opportunity to speak with others who shared Aina’s Latvian heritage.
Aina loved to cook and enjoyed fresh fruits and vegetables. She would often talk about the garden her family used to have when she was younger and the good memories of working in that garden and the wonderful meals her mother would cook.
Aina loved all animals and enjoyed watching the Animal Planet, reading books about animals and watching the rabbits in her yard. Aina’s last pet was her rabbit Gushnee, who she loved dearly. Aina’s favorite hobby most of her life was crocheting and she would often make scarves or blankets to give to others. Aina also enjoyed listening to classical music and watching The Golden Girls and The Andy Griffith Show on television.
Aina leaves behind cousins throughout the United States and many friends who have wonderful memories of their time spent with Aina.
There will be a service at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines Street, Des Moines.
Contributions may be directed to Progress Industries in loving memory of Aina.

I came to know Aina when she was living in a Crest Waiver Home. I was the Administrator there and then upon leaving Crest I was her Case Manager at Easter Seals for 6 years. I continued to visit Aina at her Progress Industries home after leaving Easter Seals. Aina loved her sardines, her chocolate, and cookies. She would always pull out her pictures and go through them with me. She was a sweet lady Whom I will miss. Rest In Peace Aina as you are now reunited with your mom and dad in heaven. Love, Carmena

Most interesting person I have had a friendship with for a few years. We both loved flowers & chocolate. Came to USA on ship with animals. She had to be very quiet at times. So it was an escape trip not pleaser.
She read a lot in her native language. Didnt get to see her much anymore but I did love her. God Bless You sweet one🦅 Bobbys mom

My wife Betsy, who passed away in 11/20/2020, worked with Aina through Easter Seals Iowa Respite Care. Aina called Betsy "God Woman." For many years after we left Ankeny, Aina still sent Betsy Christmas cards. Now they are reunited in Heaven. Rest in Peace Aina and Betsy.
Love,
