Eva Sutherland
July 10, 2021
Eva Mae Sutherland, age 95, went to be with her Savior July 10, 2021. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Eva loved serving others; whether it was mending a clothing item, fixing a sewing machine, or having people over for a Sunday roast dinner. More than anything else though, she loved telling others about the Lord Jesus and His wonderful salvation. She knew with absolute certainty that she had been saved through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and she wanted to tell others so they could be sure too.
Eva Mae was born August 27, 1925 to George and Retti Arkebauer and grew up on the family farm in Nokomis, IL. Eva was convicted of her need to be saved in Sunday School class as a young child and faithfully followed her Lord Jesus the rest of her life. She lost her parents in a train accident while a teenager and eventually moved to St. Louis, MO. While there, she met Ervin Sutherland who was serving in the Army. He won her hand and they were married December 14, 1951. They made their home in Des Moines, IA and added five children to their family: Ruth (Frank) Harder, Jonathan (Mary), Mark (Debby), Daniel (Rachel), and Paul (Esther). Later in life, Ervin and Eva moved to Pleasant Hill, IA just down the street from Frank and Ruth. As the years went by, they moved in with Frank and Ruth who cared for both of them until their move to heaven.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her children, many grandchildren, and many, many great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed, but we look forward to a joyous reunion in Heaven.
A rememberance of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 25th, 2021 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa.

We have many fond memories of Eva & Ervin. In addition to the many meals in their home, her signature salad prepared for fellowship dinners was unmatched. One of our family's favorite recipes "Enchilada Casserole" came from Eva. Her face would light up if we brought a chair to fix or sewing machine to tune. If your hair was looking a little scruffy around the ears, you would get an invitation to her "barber shop". She was passionate about sharing the gospel and would come with her notebook to enquire how the afternoon Sunday School outreach went. She wanted to know who she could pray for. Two girls from her SE 14th St. neighborhood, Mica and Ashley Faith, were so fond of Ervin and Eva, the attention they gave them, and the Bible stories they told them. We regret we have another commitment that keeps us from attending the memorial service. Her life of service left it's mark on many.

Erwin and Eva were married 2 years before Ron and I and they lived in Des Moines as we did. Ervin was very helpful in my Ron's printing of the gospel and our families were very close through the years. Eva was a sweet and lovely person and she always had a smile for everyone she met up with. She will be missed in the family, but being part of the family of God, we know that we will meet again. Love to all of the family.

I'll always remember Eva's smile. When she smiled you knew it was from the heart!! I remember her as a Very Gentile woman, and very caring of others, and always ready to help someone. She raised a wonderful family as well. To the family, My condolences to you, but we know that she is safe in the arms of Jesus her Savior. We will see her again one day soon.

I will always remember dear Eva's sweet smile and cheerful countenance. Her loving hospitality and service for the Lord's people marked her life. Our family was blessed by her good cooking numerous times. She was truly a Proverbs 31 kind-of-woman.
Our special condolences to the whole family at this difficult time. May the Lord comfort each of your hearts like no one else can.
