Kathryn "Katie" Sullivan
June 29, 2021
Kathryn Rose Sullivan (Katie Wolverton), age 72, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at MercyOne, Des Moines.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 10th from 12:00PM to 2:00PM at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50313, with a service thereafter. A celebration of Katie’s life with dinner and drinks will be held at Vittoria Lodge, 7200 NW 2nd Avenue, Ankeny, Iowa 50023 from 3:00PM to 8:00PM. All are welcome.
Born in Adair, IA, Katie joined the Wolverton family, as the second born on February 3, 1949, and that family eventually became a band of six children (actually eight, yet twins Shannon and Sharon passed away at birth). She would share a multitude of raucous childhood memories with her sister and four brothers. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1967.
Katie had many health struggles during her life, yet, with the strength and spirit of the ornery Irish woman that she was, she overcame so much. She was willing to help anyone who asked, even though she lived modestly. Katie retired as an investigator for OSHA several years ago. She took her job very seriously, thinking of the working people she served to ensure their safety. She adored her grandchildren!
Katie is survived by two sons: Joseph (Angela) Johnson and Nicholas (Valerie) Halstead. Grandchildren, Devonte and Alexis Johnson, Daniel and Victoria Halstead; great-granddaughter, Peighton Johnson; brother, Tim Wolverton, and her sister, Teresa (Loretta) Wolverton, along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding Katie in death were: Parents, Margaret and Wayne Wolverton, and Brothers, John, Patrick and Michael Wolverton.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Nick, Joe, Tim and Teresa: God has gained a wonderful new Angel. I knew Katie from junior high on. She was always such a joy to be around. I spoke with her about two months ago and she was so upbeat. She will be missed by all who knew her. My deepest condolences to each of you. May you find peace and healing in the days ahead.
